Anna Netrebko Opera Film Series

Anna Bolena (2011)

Music: Gaetano Donizetti

Libretto: Felice Romani

Director: Eric Génovèse

Conductor: Evelino Pidò

Cast: Anna Netrebko, Elīna Garanča, Ildebrando D`Arcangelo

Orchestra: Vienna State Opera Orchestra

Vienna State Opera’s first-ever staging of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena features a dream team of vocal giants. Anna Netrebko sparkles in her role debut as Anne Boleyn and gives the role a new dimension, portraying the unjustly condemned queen as a deeply hurt woman burning from within – an intensely human figure. Her ideal counterpart is the Latvian mezzo Elīna Garanča, who joins Netrebko here for their first appearance together.

Betrayed by the King and her entrusted lady-in-waiting Giovanna, Queen Anna is set up to be arrested of infidelity. Furious and disappointed, the queen loses her sanity. She curses the wicked couple and marches to execution with her head held high.
